Før i dag

My first multi engine flight
While in Hungary to do the FI(A) training, I decided to take the opportunity to ask for a short flight in the Piper PA-44 Seminole they had at the flight school. They were happy to let me give it a try, and the price was acceptable - so up we went!

Road to FI - Back on track
A little more than a month has passed since the previous post, and a lot has happened since then. I am happy to finally be able to say that this time I have studied more. A lot more. And I am getting ready to leave for the practical training in just a few days.

Road to FI - Preparation is key
A couple months has passed since the previous post, and just like the last time I still haven’t completed more than the three subjects I was done with after the first month. As mentioned in the previous post, I have decided to focus less on when I finish the CPL theory and more on actually managing to finish without getting burned out. After all, I am still doing this on my spare time, for fun.
That being said, I had still hoped to progress through the material in January. For various reasons, that didn’t happen. I do however still hope to get more done in the remaining weeks before my planned trip to Hungary.

Road to FI - Slow progress
More than two months has passed since I started studying using the Evionica CBT, and I still haven’t completed more than the three subjects I was done with after the first month. I started working on Meteorology, which is both a hard and interesting subject, but haven’t made much progress. I think I focused too much on my pre-defined schedule, which made it harder to stay focused and motivated. On top of that a lot of unforeseen events (outside of aviation) took most of the time I had available to study. And with the future of the local airplane being a bit uncertain now, I started having doubts about the entire thing.

Road to FI - First month of study
Almost a month has passed since I started studying using the Evionica CBT, and I have managed to almost complete three subjects. Almost because a bug in the CBT won’t let me finish the third one. I had initially made a plan I intended to follow every day, but flying and other activities got in the way half of the time. And some of the elements covered are simply so hard that I need some breaks in-between studying. But even though I am slightly behind the schedule I made for myself, I am happy with the progress.

Road to FI - Preparations and self-study
Sharing the joy of aviation with others are probably my favorite part of this wonderful activity. And I have for a while dreamt about being able to teach others to fly. I have talked about it with my wife, and my instructor, several times. And now I’m at the point where I have completed most of the prerequisites for the FI(A) training. I only need a little more than 4 hours of dual instrument, and then I have all of it.

Passasjerutsjekk i LN-GJP

PPL training - Skill test
Getting the skill test done turned out to take a bit longer time than I would like. The weather wasn’t the best, LN-HOG was in for it’s annual check, the airport had really bad opening hours, and I had to switch examiner. I eventually just decided that it wasn’t worth waiting for the perfect oportunity anymore, so I decided to drive down to Sola instead. This meant that I had to use an unfamiliar airplane, and fly from a much larger airport (which I still didn’t know as good as I know Karmøy). But it was time to just get this done now!

PPL training - Solo navigation 2
It’s unusually cold outside now, but we also got clear skies! So with the longer opening hours today (being a Sunday), this was the perfect day for the second and final solo navigation/cross country flight! This time I had to do a full stop landing on two other airports. In addition to this, I needed 3 hours of solo navigation time. So I spent the day yesterday planning a route from Karmøy to Sola followed by a long sightseeing route from Sola to Flesland.

The first lesson of the year was a big one - navigation via two airports. My Discovery Flight
A couple weeks before my discovery flight, I noticed something that made me stop when I scrolled through my Facebook wall. The local airport, which I of course follow, shared a posts from the local flying club, which I amazingly enough had never heard of.
The Facebook post that started it all
Can I really do this I’ve dreamt about learning to fly for a very long time, and with the option to do it only 15 minutes from home, I didn’t have any other choice - I had to give this a try!
