Avidrome is the Dutch aviation museum, and in addition to being a very large aviation museum, a lot of fun for the entire family. The museum is very family and kid friendly, with a lot of activities and playgrounds spread out across the museum. The museum is spread across several buildings, with activities and aircraft in between. There’s also a nice viewing platform overlooking the runway of the busy Lelystad airport.
The main museum building
The main museum building hosts various exhibits taking you through the history from the very first powered flight and all the way to the space age (upstairs). KLM is, as expected, a large part of this museum.
Unfortunately a lot of the exhibits lacks English translations. One of the newest exhibits (high speed flight) are effectively only available to those who understand Dutch.
Airplanes everywhere in between
The outside part of the museum connects the various buildings, like the restoration hangar and the old terminal building. The terminal building sets this museum a part from most other aviation museums, showcasing a part of aviation history that’s mostly forgotten or only available in pictures.
You can walk inside a lot of the aircraft
Make sure to explore the KLM 747 that’s connected to the main museum building through a jet bridge.
A lot of the other various aircraft spread out across the museum grounds are open to walk inside, and you can even sit down in the cockpit of of of them.
Simulators and other activities
The museum has a lot of activities, with varying opening hours. There’s also a simulator, where you can try to land an airliner - and it’s included in the ticket price.
Gift shop and café
The museum has relatively large gift shop, with various toy aircraft, models, clothing, books, and other aviation related items.
There’s also a café and play area right inside the entrance
A lot of playgrounds outside
For families, there’s also a nice playground right outside the entrance, and a nice indoor play room right after the entrance.
How much time should you plan to spend here?
You should plan around three to four hours, more if the activities are open.
