The Nationaal Militair Museum is a military museum, focusing on the Dutch military. The museum is situated at the old decommissioned Soesterberg Air Base, and there is a considerable amount of aircraft at this museum. The museum is very family and kid friendly, with a large playground in the center of the museum and a nice little café.
Wait, this is not the “milit-air museum”?
I didn’t get the extra a in Nationaal at first, so I was certain that this was the National Militair Museum, the national museum for military aviation. It made perfect sense to me, especially since it was at an air base and full of aircraft. Turns out Dutch is just very close to English (it’s like a mix of English, German and Norwegian), and that this is the National Military Museum.
It’s still full of aircraft though, and well worth the visit.
Aircraft both inside and outside
The museum is spread across two floors, and most of the aircraft is located on the ground floor. The exhibits also have information available in English.
There’s also a few aircraft located outside, which you access through the café.
Gift shop and café
The museum has nice gift shop at the entrance, with various aviation and military related items. There’s also a café located downstairs.
A lot of playgrounds outside
For families, there’s also a nice playground in the center of the museum.
How much time should you plan to spend here?
You should plan around two to three hours.
